<image:title>noise - VOICEOVERS - Originally published via 433 online.</image:title>
<image:caption>This poem was written upon my discovery that, in ancient Greek pottery & paintings, Sirens were depicted as both female & male. Somewhere in the time-soup, the feminine won out & now we have the Sirens we’re familiar with today—aquatic seductressess luring sailors (always men) to their doom with a sweet culling song. But I began to wonder about the Sirens’ other sibling—born male & yet incongruous with their sisters. A failure, even, in the deathly chorus. My friend & multi-media artist / poet Joe Nasta (ze/zir) lent me zir voice to a recording of this poem which was then engineered into a sound-art piece by Justin LoBasso using myriad found sounds. <image:title>noise - VOICEOVERS - Originally published via Interim online, Vol. 36, Issue 3.</image:title>
<image:caption>The idea for this poem took root once I learned from my dad that he had found a piece of poetry written by my mother’s mother after she passed. I had no clue she wrote, let alone poetry. This was a woman who lived through Nazi occupation of Lesvos an orphan alone with her younger sister, malnourished & without formal education. Still, she remains the wisest & most intuitive person I’ve known. Her poem is called “The Good Lord” & is written her own unique scrawl & dialect, which made the task of translation difficult for my dad (a native Athenian). The scan he sent me of the poem was damaged too, because of streaks in the scanner, which made me think of the tears across the Sapphic Fragments, how both these women came from the same land at different times, how all any of us have left of them both are these scraps & phrases. But we do have them. On a visit home one winter I recorded my parents reading the poem in Greek together, as well as my mother reading my father’s translation in English. I also salvaged the only two voicemails left of Yiayia on the family housephone. These I then compounded with a mixture of found sound & fabricated sonic textures to accompany the poem. You can listen & read along at the link below.</image:caption>

A close-quarters epic where emotions are events, memories the action. You can order a physical copy via Bookshop dot org, supporting local independent bookstores in the process. <image:title>stories - BALEEN: A Poem In Twelve Days - “In BALEEN, a Poem in Twelve Days, Greek-American poet, Cea, and Portuguese artist, Vincent Sampaio, reflect on queer yearning, illness, and place as a locus of escape, not unlike Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. However, unlike Mann's novella, tragedy is not so certain. Illness doesn't mean death. Yearning doesn't mean loss. Cea's yearning is amorphous and undulant like the water they find respite in. There seems to be no component of the poem that is not also of the sea as they move, reflectively, in and out of one another. "I crush my poem to seashells," Day Five goes, "ocean it out examine the water's wares / & I will get this wrong all rust & ruins / bobbing up from the foam". Art from Sampaio responds to these crushing moments—a broken ionic column, a slippery body melding with water, a clam with teeth tonguing a pearl, one feels as uncannily in a distant memory as much as a ruin. In Cea's world, what is fragmentary is also whole, like synecdoche made literal, the parts not representative of something complete but complete in and of themselves, as if what we fail to recapture in memory makes it any less of one. What's the difference anyway between a memory and a ruin?”</image:title>

<image:caption>We listen to our favorite songs over and over, rewatch the same shows for the hundredth time in a row—we are always coming back to what we know. What is that compulsion? Is it because these things give us comfort, or because there’s something about them that we just can’t fully put down? In this five-week online workshop, we will explore how sensations of continuity and expansion can get worked out in poetic cycles or extended projects—small bodies of work which, like houses, need every room in order to function. We’ll read cycles of poetry by poets both contemporary and classic, while also drawing inspiration from music. The focus, ultimately, is to shift our thinking away from making “a collection of poems” to a more self-contained body of work, as much the sum of its parts as all the individual pieces. <image:title>courses & links - Re-Visioning The Timeline (Brooklyn Poets, Fall '20) - truthfully the lie of it all is much more honest, because I invented it. —lady gaga, the prelude pathétique</image:title>
<image:caption>When broken apart, the word “re-vision” implies a kind of newness, seeing something familiar again as if for the first time. A poem, like the past, cannot be boiled down to one objective version—rather, an experience can be told and retold endlessly from different perspectives, allowing for many unique interpretations to orbit around the story’s heart. We see this tradition at work in poetry and music alike, from poem cycles and persona poems to folk songs and the blues. In this seven-week online workshop, we’ll first draw on various poetic and musical structures to explore the consequences of re-visiting / re-viewing / re-telling different versions of our past across many poems, in an attempt to get at the heart of our memories. From there, we’ll construct our own unique poetic landscapes, no matter how fantastic or surreal, to re-view our past and ultimately re-vision our future. To be clear, the goal is not to “revise” the poem-object in the traditional sense, but more consciously to catalogue the symbols, structures and landscapes that make up the stuff of our poems. Essentially, what do we keep going back to—and why? (Polaroid of Douglas Rogerson’s installation, Through & Through, Summer ‘20)</image:caption>

<image:title>courses & links - Chorus of Selves (Brooklyn Poets, Summer '20) - “i came here, child, because i care / for your welfare as my own” — chorus speaking to elektra (trans. anne carson)</image:title>
<image:caption>We often think of a chorus as the part of a song we can’t get out of our head. It’s no coincidence that the ancient Greek root of the word implies a collective singing and dancing of poetry. In ancient Greek drama, the chorus was a persona both one and many—a group of voices speaking and moving together that would periodically interact with the characters on stage as part of the plot while also providing contextual information for the audience directly. The chorus was both inside and outside the action at once. “The ideal spectator,” as scholars have noted, representative of a larger collective experience, in contrast to the individual “hero.” In this five-week online workshop, we’ll consider ourselves—our many selves, those different versions of us across every time and place that we have lived—to create our own personal poetic landscape. By creating poems out of our composite lived experience, we’ll begin to feel time as less linear and more spherical, allowing many different versions of ourselves to speak at once—in essence creating a chorus of selves, a unique landscape in which we’re both the actors and spectators of our own lives, both the speakers and audiences of our own poems. We’ll explore different interpretations of the chorus (by Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles) and the work of contemporary poets who expertly use multiple voices to create unique, tactile landscapes from their lived experiences.</image:caption>

<image:title>courses & links - Culture Songs: Epic Poetry Then & Now (Brooklyn Poets, Spring '24) - “No mortal can escape or flee from death. / So let us go. Perhaps we shall succeed, / and win a triumph from another’s death, / or somebody may triumph over us.” The Iliad, trans. Emily Wilson</image:title>
<image:caption>In this six-week, in-person workshop, we'll explore poetry's oldest form, the epic, as a means by which to mythologize, historicize, criticize and ultimately understand our current cultural moment. The epic has played an integral part in many civilizations' establishment and understanding of themselves, from ancient Mesopotamia and pre-Christian Greece to the burgeoning national identities of Finland and the United States. In this workshop, we'll contextualize and engage with excerpts from a number of epics across upwards of 4000 years, all the while working on our own extended "modern epic" poems. The central questions are these: what makes a hero heroic? What power can collective memory hold? How, ultimately, do our memory and belief outweigh any attempt at uncovering "the truth"?</image:caption>

<image:title>courses & links - Take Yr Time: Exploring The Long Poem (Brooklyn Poets, Summer '24) - “I keep forgetting it’s not a personal defeat to be so sick. / What was once a mind for music and words has become an amateur mad-scientist, / an expert at needle-gauging—butterfly 25 if you’re going for the hand— / an evolutionary step up from rat or chimp for drug protocols called obnoxiously / ‘cocktails’ by the reading public (a joke on gays, I’m certain)” Excerpt from “What Calendars Have Become,” HIV, Mon Amour — Tory Dent</image:title>
<image:caption>Sometimes poems need room to ramble, to frolic, to breathe and wander in unknown directions before the threads they want to follow become clear. In this five-week, in-person workshop, we'll take our time to wander alongside poems that ask us to pack a bag and a light snack, maybe something comfy to change into, while they unfold over the course of many pages. We'll consider the political implications of taking up extended space in a poetry landscape that is perhaps more popularly concerned with brevity. We'll also challenge each other to pull our own poetic inspiration to the end of its spool, leaning into the expanse that a long poem invites us to explore.</image:caption>

<image:title>courses & links - For The Record: Poetry As Documentation (Brooklyn Poets, Fall '24) - "I Pass my life / through the eye of the same rusty / old needle / and I sew, I sew my passion.” — Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke, Trans. Eleni Fourtouni</image:title>
<image:caption>Poetry, like life, never happens in a vacuum. We are always tied to our own times and bodies and political circumstances, but this is not a restrictive bind–it is a powerful thread connecting us all. If we re-consider the act of “documentation” as less about trying to preserve time and more about trying to understand our relationship to it and role within it, then we can start to view poems not as static works of art on a page, but as an enduring record of lived experience. This is poetry that digs its heels into time and says: “I was here, I am still here, and I will go on being here.” During this six-week, in-person workshop, we will read and engage with a number of poets and musicians who have used their work to document their experience in relation to the political circumstances of their time. Together we will work towards a poetry of interconnectedness—one that can mobilize us in the present moment while also reaching forward to the future, leaving a record of our movements in its wake. <image:caption>In the Summer of 2017 I traveled to Greece with my family. Specifically, we visited Athens (my dad’s hometown), Mytilene (the village on Lesvos where my Yiayia, my mother’s mother, was born), then finally Santorini. It was my first visit since Yiayia passed on & we went to see the house she grew up in. Orphaned with her younger sister at an early age, they lived in that house with an adoptive relative under Nazi occupation. Now it slouches, sunbleached & structurally unsound, without anyone to care for it. Connecting with that space & simultaneously noticing the countless half-begun / abandoned housing structures scattering the various hills & coasts during that trip was the initial inspiration for [Ruins.In.Progress.] as a whole. I offer this as a kind of beginning—a tribute to all the lives that could have happened in those structures & a prayer for so many possible futures.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This installation of [R.I.P.] was a collaboration between myself & photographer Francesco di Benedetto, creator & curator of the project, And So It Happened—a photo interview series with folks taking antiretroviral treatment for HIV/AIDS & also with folks taking PrEP, with the ultimate goal of cataloguing the diverse range of people (not simply cis gay men) affected by HIV/AIDS today in attempt to undermine stigma. I reached out to Francesco to do an interview which was then expanded into this piece published by Blood Tree Literature for Issue 4: Transparency, October 2018.

<image:caption>Written between Halloween 2020 & Easter 2021, Poem For You began in a small lined legal pad as a way to process my experience of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic by writing short, spontaneous poems dedicated to various people / moments / objects / locations / feelings / situations etc. The project has since grown beyond the initial notebook & like much of my work is entering the world in many different ways. One day I hope to put a physical document of it into the world in the form of a bound book, but for now, I offer this page.</image:caption>
